Leadership is Tough Decisions Made For The Best

Leadership is tough. Leaders often have to make unpopular decisions; and too many ‘followers’ like Popular Leaders; the ones who please the crowd; and do what the crowd wants rather than what NEEDS to be done; That why it’s tough.

If you please the crowd, you meet their need for immediate gratification – and yet if that decision ends up being BAD longterm; the people will not say “well we wanted the short term solution!” — nope; They’ll call you a bad leader.

Leadership is tough.

When you make the unpopular decision; You loose followers; People say you don’t know what the hell you doing; Should your plan fail due to lack of support; People won’t say well not enough people supported …. They’ll say … He/She is a bad leader.

Leadership … is tough.

That is why in all my years of training in the realm of business, on the topic of Leadership, I always mention the role of followers as well; because it truly is the key; a good leader needs good followers; That is what makes the Tough job of leadership … easier.

And .. it sets up those followers to become great leaders in the future; as they too will understand the tough decisions that need to be made; and will realize the importance of the support needed to accomplish any goal.

MLM Leadership :: Leveraging Talents For Team Success

Let’s discuss Leveraging talents for team Success. Have you been in business long enough to meet people who proudly proclaim to be ‘one man/woman bands’ …?  I certainly have. They think it’s a badge of merit, and also use this as a way to sneak diss other people. It’s a way of saying, I am doing this all by myself because no one else wants to do this with me.

When talking of the “long walks” I have been on, even I must be careful not to make this misstep.

This is also why I want to put this out here, so no one gets this idea. In fact, let’s discuss from an MLM Leadership perspective, and a business owner P.O.V. as well.  Because this industry attracts so many people with a self employed mentality, there are several ‘leaders’ who are pulling together. In MLM, Leadership truly is all about Leveraging Talents for Team Success. It does involve understanding ‘how to play the game’, and from there individual talents can shine through.

For example – some people are great talkers, but if they don’t understand how to play this game, they’ll talk themselves out of sales.

The ‘best use’ of that talent, is Doing Presentations and Training. If you’re a leader that enjoys speaking, be sure to apply that talent where it matters. Spending time talking, for the sake of talking, is eating up time you (or that leader) could be spending on prospecting.  Let’s say you don’t like to talk ‘verbally’ but do enjoy speaking with your hands. Many of you ‘should’ be using those talents to ‘write’ for your team.  Instead of just tweeting, or debating politics on facebook, ‘apply’ your talents for team success.

In MLM, too often folks want to play every single role. To be fair I see this in business too.

Some leaders will have a team member who makes beautiful flyers, and instead, decide to make the flyers themselves.  They don’t have the same sense of design, and feel like it won’t really matter. Unaware of the psychology that is going on with the people they’re seeking to reach. These leaders are short sighted, and are more interested in being in charge, playing the role – than BEING that role. A real leader, a good one, will leverage the talent on the team. Leveraging that talent, using the one who excels at it, gives that leader more ‘time’ to do other things. The flyer, designed by a better eye, will also be more effective when promoted. The end result of the two people leveraging their talents together would be a much larger ‘turn out’ to the event, the leader and the team is promoting.

Where as, cutting the flyer designer out, makes them feel ‘less a part of the team’, and less likely to even help promote said event. Especially when the flyer is trash….

When building teams, the first thing I’m examining is talent. I look at skill sets to see where the best place to put them would be.  This is a big reason that for years, while building Crazygood, another leader on my team was doing the weekly presentations. Even though I was more than capable, had already made video presentations to recruit most of my leaders, to ‘grow’ the team, I knew I would need other leaders, to Help lead.  This was a very effective move, that eventually went from leveraging talents for team success, to coming up with an entire system for all our multiple streams.

That, however, became the new challenge. Several ‘leaders’ have come through the doors of the 1mlmsystem, but most are promoting a company.  I’m looking for the people, who come through our doors, talking about building a team.

Don’t Impulsively Sign Up With Me (Sponsoring In Network Marketing)

Sponsoring in Network Marketing is an art form, a skill set that often goes under appreciated.  it’s like being a great basketball player, where ‘fans’ simply assume your talents were with you at birth. They say, look at how tall you are, how big your hands are, and oh wow – those muscles! You have to have been born with all of your talents, coordination, and ability to hit a jumpshot.  I suppose it’s somewhat natural, since I get this with blogging, with web design, or even making flyers. People do this in the network marketing space as well.  They see people excelling and figure there is no way they could too.

When it comes to sponsoring in network marketing, people often look at those who’ve been really good at it and think it must come natural.

There is no way I could ever do that, or be as great at it as that guy.  That top earning woman speaks so well, she uses so many great words, and really knows how to pull people in. I’ll never be able to sponsor people like they do!

This negative self talk absolutely damages your chances of success. No way will you ever find yourself sponsoring in network marketing like top earners do, with that inner dialogue going on.  Not only does that have to change, but so do your ideas about thinking that WHO your sponsor is, matters.  It doesn’t matter at all, and you’ll only come to find that out later.

If you’re just starting out, or if you’ve been struggling you may not fully understand this. Your sponsor does not matter.  Signing up with a top earner, does not mean you are going to become a top earner too. They may not teach you everything they know, or may have cut corners. Most often, top earners tend to be great at signing up people who are greater at sponsoring than they are!

Did you catch that?

They’re not always ‘the best’ at it, but they know how to attract ‘the best’.  People have different skill sets and that is why Teamwork is so crucial in network marketing. This is not an individual sport, here, success happens in groups. Oftentimes the success of the group, or lack of it, will impact your individual sponsoring production. To put it more simply, if you’re working with a team that is producing results, you can attain similar or better results, just because you are part of that team. The more involved you are with that team, the more likely you’ll benefit from the overall team success.

Sponsoring in Network Marketing is ‘actually’ a teamwork thing ….

Out the gate I Let you know that ‘if you cannot sponsor people it’s because people don’t trust you. No Trust = No sales.”  As an individual you can ‘only have so much trust’ with others. But when you are part of a ‘partnership’, your ability to build trust with others goes up!  Especially when you dive deeper and use the ‘skills’ we teach within the network marketing industry.  That skill is Edification, a Tool that will Transform your Results in MLM – Edification will help you build ‘trust’, so that you can begin excelling at sponsoring in network marketing.

You actually have to get good at saying GOOD things about other people, and allowing those people to say Good things about you. This ‘good press’ is how a lot of Top earners end up with random people signing up with them. I know because people do this with me. However that’s a huge mistake!  Don’t ‘impulse sign up’ with me, or anyone you don’t really know in network marketing.  Always go back to the person that referred you, because it helps ‘maintain trust’ and respect in the network.  It’s also how we all make money in this space.  When you or I violate that ‘trust’,  we endanger the future of our organizations.

When a Team respects the Network, and shows respect for the Business Partnerships already in place, in the long term, that leads to a team that is even more productive! Bruce Levenson: Racism or Just Business?

I know that you’ve heard the news by now, about Atlanta Hawks majority owner Bruce Levenson, ‘outing’ himself as a racist. He decided to blow the whistle on himself, informing NBA Officials about an email he sent in 2012, which contained ‘Racially Charged’ language.

When I first heard the story my reaction was to laugh, because there was nothing racist about what he wrote in that email from what I could tell. Then, I read the email – which confirmed my initial reaction. This isn’t racism. This is business.

The dirty secret about business is that it’s very much about race.

These same kinds of conversations go on in MLM all the time. Way back in my ACN days we’d often get plenty of training on this fact. What excited a white audience was different from what excited a black audience. I talk about those ‘old days’ of hotel meetings even though in many cities throughout America they are still going on. What you will find in almost all of these ‘offices’ aka hotel meetings is that some are mostly white; some are mostly black; and so on.

I read a book co-authored by Charles King called “The New Professionals” – which spoke directly about how race is taken into consideration with big companies that hope to appeal to several demographics. Race is almost always taken into mind when it comes to business. But we don’t talk about it nearly enough, so I’m glad this letter from Bruce Levenson has been exposed.

The New Professionals spoke about how aware MLM Companies are of Diversity.

They are very aware (the good ones at least) that they need to appeal to all races; not just one. The companies that do not think about this are not around very long.

When an MLM Company is ‘too white’ – they will pay well known black leaders with a good reputation; and often they will turn around and find a team of black leaders to join them – and the goal is to bring more diversity to that company. At some point, a meeting was most likely held, and it was determined that more needed to be done to diversify the company.

Meanwhlie… some MLM companies have too many black people. We don’t talk about it; in fact ‘when’ these conversations happen most people are Very Careful not to put these thoughts into an Email – for fear of coming off as a racist. BUT, several MLM companies are comprised of too many black people – and are ‘scaring white networkers away.’

I can name a few right now, where the fact that the MLM company is comprised mostly of “Urban Networkers” – whites seemingly do not take any interest in those companies. (5linx, MCA, WakeUpNow, Organo Gold) – this is one of the reasons The Black Folder was started by TopNetworkersGroup. We wanted to have this discussion that so often happens in back rooms.

I remember when I was working with Escape International; a team member of mine from Massachusetts told me specifically, that his mother and her boyfriend didn’t feel comfortable bringing their guests and prospects on our calls; which were mostly run by black leaders on our team. I’m thankful for his honesty, which is rare.

Many people don’t know this story – early on when I worked with CEO’s Unlimited, our calls were conducted by two gentlemen; Melvin Bradley and Allen Hallimon III,. Most of the calls were conducted by Allen Hallimon who had an awesome delivery with plenty of Soul. However, his presentation was the kind of presentation that was geared mostly for a black audience. What I wrote about a few minutes ago has always been an issue in MLM. So I made a suggestion to Melvin, to allow my partner at the time, Brandon Ivey to conduct those calls.

Brandon grew up in a very white neighborhood, and spoke very proper English. So his ‘presentation of information‘ would be appealing both to our black audiences and also our white audiences; because business is very much about race. My suggestion worked – we put over 1,000 people into that company in the next few months after that change was made. Soon our team had people of many Ethnicities – and he’s done very well since.

Black business owners are very conscious of Wealth Inequality in America.(as are most business owners; regardless of their racial background)

Most are very aware that whites and Asians make the most money, and therefore have the most money to spend. Almost all black business owners are interested in ways to ‘tap into’ white money; Asian money, and even Hispanic money. Most blacks know that in order to make this happen, relationships must be developed with people from each market.

This same conversation goes on in MLM all the time.

MLM companies that are based in the USA but want to expand into Mexico, South America, or other Hispanic countries, ALL look to identify Hispanic leaders who will help with that expansion.  I can remember when ACN went international, and had to change leadership rank names – from Field Trainer to Team Trainer; because something about Field Trainer was offensive to people in the Netherlands. ACN knew that in order to do business in the Netherlands, they had to establish relationships with people from there; who could tell them what is offensive, what is inclusive. That’s business.

Whether it’s MLM or the traditional business model, this is how all business owners think.

If anything, the email from Bruce Levenson merely exposed just how real racism still is in our supposed post-racial society. He talked about how nice and pleasant all of the people  working at the Hawks games were.  He spoke of how there were no incidents, no crimes – no muggings or pick pocketing.  He spoke about how in spite of how safe it was to be at Hawks Games, southern whites were just not comfortable coming to games where they might be the minority.

If anything, his email speaks to the very fears and irrational misconceptions that many whites still have of black people. Many of these fears and misconceptions have their roots in media propaganda; movies and television shows – music videos; which depict black people as thugs, criminals – dangers to society. Sadly in spite of overwhelming evidence that these elements, which do exist in the black community – can also be found in all communities; and are usually no where near the norm; sadly people still buy into these stereotypes about the black race.

This is why, when George Zimmerman saw Trayvon Martin walking home to his father’s residence, Trayvon appeared to be ‘acting strange’.  This was and is George’s perception of black people. Black people recognized it right away when we heard the phone call. But ‘racism’ was shot down as a component in his trial; ruled out by the jurors – as having no impact on his decision to follow, stalk, provoke a fight, and eventually murder Trayvon Martin.

This negative racist perception of blacks, is why we just saw over $500,000 raised for the white police officer who, from all accounts, murdered unarmed Mike Brown – setting off a nation wide discussion, once again; on Race.

If anything, this is where Bruce Levenson has dropped the ball; while exposing just how clueless so many white people seem to be ,about what IS racism, and what isn’t.

Silently complying with racism is racism.

The Hawks owner should have made a public statement about the shameful nature of southern whites not to attend Hawks games, for the reason they were not attending.

Trying to appease their racial nature; rather than challenge them to change – is racism.

I totally understand the business side of it; More white cheerleaders; more music that white people listen to – all to make the experience ‘more appealing’ to white basketball fans. That in and of itself, is the problem with racism. As a nation we should be asking the question; just why are white people so uncomfortable around black people??

This is also what MLM should be doing too. MLM should be having a conversation – about Racism in Business. We should be challenging each other to be better; just as we challenge each other to read; to grow and develop personally – We should also put it out there; that we should make the effort to End Racism; To do business with one another regardless of someone’s racial background; To get more comfortable with conference calls, and hotel meetings that are not conducted by the same ole’ same ole’ …

Instead, MLM allows itself to get far too political.

The ills of society find their way into the MLM Industry; which itself is trapped by society – since it emerged OUT of society. When You and I grow, and learn, and self educate – we find out what society is. We come to realize that it is you and I who determine what society is; That society is an ever changing, ever evolving word that simply describes What we allow; and what we do not.

Through TopnetworkersGroup – me and MY team will address the issues that MLM Companies are afraid to address. We will challenge everyone to do better; to be better.

Until then, we will continue to discuss race in business as well.

The purpose of The Black Folder is not to shun non-blacks away; but rather to Inform black people in business, and to wake them up to a reality that far too many blacks try to avoid; or ignore. The fact that most races do NOT want to do business with black people.

For this reason, black people MUST learn to do business with each other; for our very survival as a race. Until other races deal with their demons – their misconceptions and false perceptions of black people; Until they start doing business with us – WE must do business with one another. I have more thoughts on Bruce Levenson; as well as reactions from several others to share as well. But clearly, he just wanted to sell the team and make some money. If he really wants to do something about racism; He’s got the platform to do it from. Whether or not he’ll use it for that purpose – is pretty clear already.

We live in a society that promotes ‘the individual’ and individuality is the root of Ego. It’s about Me, Me, Me – it’s the “no I in Team, but I in Win” mentality.

But this is Fantasy!

The reality; what wins Championships – in all areas of life, especially sports and business – is Tenacious D!! Team Defense!

It’s One Unit Mentality that achieves success.

It’s teamwork.

This is what I love about the network marketing industry; because the blueprint to success has already been laid out by so many people who have built teams and accomplished incredible financial fortunes along the way. In this industry you are either Building the team or you are building your team ‘within a team’. I think it’s easy to forget that most people who come into this industry and even several of the people who sign up, come from ‘a matrix for their minds’. Most people come from a society that promotes the individual; meanwhile what we ignore is the reality.

No man is an Island.

There is no such thing as the ‘self made man or woman’.

These are myths that people tell themselves; often to feed their ego…. because the ego NEEDS to be fed.

But; the reality – the truth that shall set you free is this; Teamwork makes the dream work. What dream do you have? What team do you have?

Back in January I put together a video where I talked about the importance of “having the right people” on your team. In this video I discuss the reality of star players like Kobe Bryant and Lebron James, who need team mates to help them win. As great and as dynamic as these players are, none of them, not even the great Michael Jordan himself, were able to win without getting help from others. However, “the others” didn’t all have to be superstars.

Yes, Kobe had Shaq, and later needed Pau.

Yes, Lebron needed Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.

Yes, Michael Jordan needed Scottie Pippin.

But the other ‘role players’ were just as important as the superstar role players. Because in all of these situations, someone is playing a role. Even between the superstars, there is a leader and a follower. That’s what makes a successful business parntership; that is what makes a successful sports teamwork partnership – because Two Leaders Cannot Lead Each Other. This is what broke up the Kobe/Shaq Lakers. This is what would’ve doomed the Lebron, Dwanye Wade Heat – but Dwayne doesn’t have the same kind of alpha male personality as a Lebron James; or even a Kobe Bryant.

This speaks volumes to the importance of chemistry.

Sometimes its just not in the cards for two people to work together within the same space – or the same team.

You see with Kobe and Shaq, you had two alpha males and honestly, I feel Kobe was willing to follow Shaq, however Kobe constantly challenged that leadership in ways that annoyed Shaq’s Ego. So for example, Kobe would take the ball to the rack or shoot a jumper rather than run the offense and allow the ball to go into Shaquille. However what you could tell is, Kobe just wanted to get a win, for the team. Perhaps people did not understand this within the moments that it unfolded, but now that we look back over his career and see times when Kobe could’ve left the Lakers; you see a person who really and truly wanted (and seemingly still wants) to bring championships to the Franchise.

With Shaquille – we see a man who was mostly about himself.

He cared more about ‘being the man’, than about ‘being a champion’ – He wanted to give orders; and demand the ball but, refused to work on his free throws so that IF/when teams fouled him after getting the ball, it wouldn’t turn into a wasted possession. The casual fan in the stands is not thinking of this because the casual fan is also, poisoned with the message of ‘be an individual’.

So they bark of his dominance while ignoring how much MORE dominant he would’ve been as a 70% freethrow shooter, instead of what he was over the course of his career.

That’s all Phil Jackson tried to do with Shaq; get him to be more than he was settling for.

I think that’s all Kobe was trying to do as well.

But, Kobe was doing it for the team. He was set on blossoming and being more.

He wanted to grow and expand his game.

He wanted to lead a team to victory and eventually He got that opportunity.

When we look at a Dwayne Wade; he’s a great player, but has never been to a championship without another dominant alpha male type personality.

This is a major aspect of what it means, for teamwork to make the dream work.

Often we are like pieces to a puzzle; often we are incomplete. Often those of us in business can look to sports to see all the answers to what is going on in our own organizations. We can see that we may need more, or less alpha males. We can see that we need more or less role players. We see the lack of chemistry or begin to notice how chemistry is playing a major role in the production – because that is the reality.

Teamwork makes the dream work in business;  just like in sports.

When Lebron first came to Miami, out of respect for Dwayne Wade he didn’t wanna just take over right away. But, the two of them had a conversation after that first trip to the finals. Wade pretty much gave the reigns to Lebron; told him to do what he does best. That conversation took them to the finals 3 more years in a row; winning 2 of them.

Road to Success

When I first saw this image of ‘what most people think success looks like vs what successful people know the road to success IS like” – I thought of everything I just shared with you. This is that road to success and all those “Fail” spots are the times when we went off on our own; and tried to accomplish big things alone.  We start to get closer to the end of that road, once we finally connect with the right people.

Along the way, together, there will still be a few more ‘spots’ where we find out that not ALL of the people on the team; were meant to stay on the team forever; You’ll lose a few key role players perhaps; and you’ll stall out while you look to replace them – but so long as the core keeps moving together toward the goal; You will reach that goal.

The desire alone, is not enough.

The circumstances absolutely must come together.

A team must be built – OR you must attach yourself to a team that is being built, and play a position – a position which COULD be worth millions to you, simply by doing your part.

You may not be the star of the team – but everyone on the team gets a Ring.

Everyone on the Team gets to call themselves, A Champion!

Teamwork makes the dream work – in all areas of life – whatever you are seeking to achieve; as soon as you have the right people – who all want the same things; That Goal WILL be accomplished.
