When it comes to network marketing, sports analogies work very well. I want to focus our attention on Stars and Role players in sports. I’m a HUGE basketball fan and this term is used often to describe the players on a team. Your star players are usually going to do the big stuff; score the points, make the Big plays in the game – get most of the playing time…. meanwhile the Role players do everything else; some would call it the little stuff.
The thing is, if you’re part of a team that is seeking to win a championship, the little stuff always matters. So while it’s important to have talented Star players who can do the big stuff; you still need that guy who’s going to give his all to play Defense, and get those rebounds to give his team another shot at the other end.
Many of us know about the Chicago Bulls who won 72 games; an NBA best – and we all know that team featured two of the NBA’s 50 greatest – Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. This team also had quite a few key Role players, who helped push them to become one of the best NBA teams of all time, at least, on paper.
One of those role players, was Dennis Rodman.
During his playing days He developed a reputation for his off the court antics, and even some of the things he did on the court; including his crazy hairstyles. However, he was known on the court as a tenacious defender and a league leading rebounder.
So when he teamed up with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, He didn’t have to do it all; he just had to do the little things – Jordan and Pippen would do the rest. We’d be re-missed to leave out important role players like B.J. Armstrong and Steve Kerr, who simply had to make sure they didn’t turn the ball over; and knock down open 3’s when they got them.
As great as the star players were, they do not win 72 games, or several championships, without the contributions of the role players doing the little things.
I’m a big Laker fan – and had the pleasure of watching the latest 5 Championships as an adult – being able to fully appreciate what it means to be a fan of this franchise. The Kobe and Shaq dynamic Duo may go down as the best Duo ever in history; Time will tell – Dwayne Wade and Lebron James will definitely have something to say about that; and just as is the case in Miami now, as it was in Los Angeles, ROLE Players are the key to those teams winning championships.
Several key role players come to mind when I reflect on the Laker championships – Starting with Derick Fisher. I can remember when D. Fish left the Lakers between the Kobe/Shaq dynasty, and the Kobe/Gasol mini-run; The moment D. Fish returned to the Lakers, they seemed to have that ‘it’ factor going again. He made a tremendous difference and I’d argue would make a huge impact on their team right now.
Ray Allen on the other hand, who’s spent almost his entire career as a Star Player, decided to ‘chase a ring’ last season when he joined the Miami Heat; to be a Role player; and oh what a role he played – hitting huge shots at the right time, helping his team to a second championship in as many years. There are several other role players on the Heat, like Chris “Birdman” Anderson, who seem to do the little things real well; They play hard, get rebounds, and play defense as well as they can; They are every bit as important as the stars.
See, this is the beauty of teamwork.
There are several teams in the NBA with star players who seem to be dynamic; but even those stars need HELP From the other people on their team; They need others to play as hard as they are playing; to give their all, even if it’s not as much.
Let’s look at network marketing for a moment and realize, that we are looking at the same thing; if you have star players on your network marketing team, who are willing to Do presentations, and meet with your people – lead the way and set an example; There are still ‘little things’ that they need their business partners to do. Those little things make a huge difference in the results of the team.
A team that edifies, is a team that attracts.
People want to be around people that like being around each other. So when ‘role players’ become jealous of the stars, and feel like the stars are talking too much – that negative state of mind transfers to the people looking at your team; They’ll be turned off and turned away; However when those role players Look FORWARD to what the star players have to say – that energy immediately translates into Positive results for everyone involved.
In network marketing, eventually everyone WILL need to play the ‘star role’ – and everyone will need to play the “role player” roles — So professionals try to figure out what ‘role’ they need to be playing; and embrace that role while they’re in it. The better you are at playing YOUR ROLE, the better results you will see, in this industry of network marketing.
